Two Types of Online Learning
http://goo.gl/ZWtsrV
Thomas Arnett has written a well informed article about the different technologies and how they can be used to create a well rounded online or blended learning environment.

In the article Arnett outlines these different types as:

  • Instructional technologies.
  • Virtual interaction technologies

Instructional technologies are based upon technologies that give direct information or instructions to the student. This information is often static and doesn’t include the input in real time from other individuals. Instructional technologies include ebooks, articles, photographs etc.

Virtual interaction technologies are techonologies that allow communication and interactions between students and trainers. This is an important aspect to online learning as it allows feedback and input from the learner. These technologies include email, video conferencing, file sharing etc.

Arnett weighs up the additional strengths that these two categories can give online learning but also notes the shortcomings that online learning will never substitute important aspects of traditional schooling (such as social skills, child care, body language etc).
